Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Greater Pewee (Contopus pertinax) and Dark Pewee (Contopus lugubris). Subspecies ardosiacus thought by some authors to be possibly a separate species. Further study is required. Validity of some other subspecies questionable.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
ardosiacus (Lafresnaye, 1844) - Colombia (except south-west), extreme western and south-western Venezuela, eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru.
