Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 600 - 2,100 m.
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- villosus Sclater, 1860 - Locally in eastern Panama (Cerro Taracuna), western Colombia and north-western Ecuador.
- schaeferi Aveledo & Pons, 1952 - Locally in north-eastern Colombia and western Venezuela.
- clarus Zimmer, JT, 1939 - Eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru.
- peruvianus Todd, 1922 - South-eastern Peru and north-western Bolivia.
