Subspecies
Closely related to Small Jamaican Elaenia (Myiopagis cotta), which is considered conspecific by some. Possibly also close to Pacific Elaenia (Myiopagis subplacens). Subspecies pallens, zuliae and restricta differ minimally from accola, perhaps better merged with last.
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:
jaliscensis Nelson, 1900 - Western Mexico (Nayarit and Zacatecas south to Guerrero).
minima Nelson, 1898 - Tres Marias Is, off Nayarit (Mexico).
placens (Sclater, PL, 1859) - Eastern Mexico (Veracruz south to Yucatán Peninsula, and Cozumel I), Caribbean slope of Guatemala and eastern Honduras.
pacifica (Brodkorb, 1943) - Pacific slope from southern Mexico (Chiapas) south to western Honduras.
accola Bangs, 1902 - Nicaragua south to northern and north-western Colombia and north-western Venezuela (Táchira).
zuliae Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1955 - Foothills of Sierra de Perijá in extreme northern Venezuela.
restricta Todd, 1952 - Coastal mountains and lowlands of Venezuela (east of Andes, north of Amazon Basin), also Guyana.
implacens (Sclater, PL, 1862) - South-western Colombia (Nariño), western Ecuador (south to Loja) and extreme north-western Peru.
viridicata (Vieillot, 1817) - South-eastern Peru, northern Bolivia, south-central, eastern and south-eastern Brazil, Paraguay, and north-western and north-eastern Argentina (south to Tucumán, Formosa and Corrientes).
