Subspecies
Unpublished molecular data suggest that genus is closely related to Chapada Flycatcher (Suiriri affinis). All members of genus formerly treated as conspecific, but vocal and plumage data support existence of three species, possibly more. Additional study needed in order to resolve species limits. Birds in highlands of Bolivia, which are longer-winged but resident, may represent an unnamed cryptic species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
modestus (Wied, 1831) - Central Peru (Urubamba Valley) and northern Bolivia east through southern Brazil (east to Maranhío, Pernambuco and Paraná).
brevirostris (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Breeds southern Bolivia and Paraguay south to northern Argentina (south to Buenos Aires and Mendoza) and east to Uruguay. Regular non-breeding visitor north to eastern Peru and central Amazonia.
