Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Painted Tody-Flycatcher (Todirostrum pictum) and Black-headed Tody-Flycatcher (Todirostrum nigriceps), and all sometimes treated as conspecific.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • guttatum Pelzeln, 1868   -  Colombia (southern from western Meta and Guainí­a) and north-western Brazil south to eastern Ecuador and extreme north-eastern Peru (north-eastern Loreto).
  • chrysocrotaphum Strickland, 1850   -  Northern Peru and western Brazil (east to Tefé, in central Amazonas).
  • neglectum Carriker, 1932   -  Eastern Peru, south-western Brazil and northern Bolivia.
  • simile Zimmer, JT, 1940   -  Left bank of R Tapajós, in western Pará (north-central Brazil).
  • illigeri (Cabanis & Heine, 1860)   -  North-eastern Brazil from right bank of R Tapajós east to northern Maranhío.
