Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland seasonally wet / flooded grassland. From sea-level - 1,000 m.
Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile (B), Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.
Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2020) and stable.

Subspecies
May form superspecies with Greater Yellow-headed Vulture (Cathartes melambrotus ), but are widely sympatric. Formerly called Cathartes urubitinga or Cathartes urubutinga .
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
burrovianus Cassin, 1845 - Central America south to central Colombia and north-western Venezuela.
urubutinga Pelzeln, 1861 - Southern America to Argentina and Brazil (east of the Andes).
