Southern Mexico south through Central America to Colombia, east to the Guianas and Trinidad, and east of Andes south through Brazil and Bolivia to Paraguay and northern Argentina. Formerly thought to nest only around periphery of Amazon, but recent records of adults and juveniles in central Brazilian Amazonia suggest that species breeds throughout extensive range.
