Subspecies
Subspeciess obscurus and aequatorialis possibly only morphs, or result of individual variation.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
obscurus (Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1953) - Sierra de Perijá, in north-western Venezuela.
meridensis (Chapman, 1923) - Andes of western Venezuela.
macabrus (Bonaparte, 1850) - Central and western Andes from Colombia and Ecuador south to northern Peru.
albogularis (Cassin, 1850) - Eastern Andes of Colombia and northern Ecuador.
aequatorialis (Chapman, 1922) - Eastern Ecuador.
remotus (Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1941) - Eastern Andes from Peru south to central Bolivia (Cochabamba).
