Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 500 m.
Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Crimson Topaz (Topaza pella).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- pyra (Gould, 1846) - Western Amazonia. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Crimson Topaz (Topaza pella).
- amaruni Hu, Joseph & Agro, 2000 - Western Amazonian Peru and Ecuador (ríos Napo and Corrientes).
- pamprepta Oberholser, 1902 - Eastern Ecuador (Suno, R Napo). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Crimson Topaz (Topaza pella).
