Subspecies
Systematic position poorly understood. The genera Phlogophilus, Anthocephala and Urosticte have been suggested as close relatives, some authors even considering all four to be congeneric. However, because monophyly of these four is doubtful, the monotypic status of Adelomyia is maintained.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
aeneosticta Simon, 1889 - Northern and central Venezuela.
melanogenys (Fraser, 1840) - Andes of western Venezuela (Mérida) and eastern Colombia south through eastern Andes to south-central Peru.
cervina Gould, 1872 - Western and central Andes of Colombia.
connectens Meyer de Schauensee, 1945 - Huila (southern Colombia).
maculata Gould, 1861 - Ecuador to northern Peru.
chlorospila Gould, 1872 - South-eastern Peru.
inornata (Gould, 1846) - Yungas of Bolivia and north-western Argentina (Salta, Jujuy).
sabinae (Bourcier & Mulsant, 1846) - West slope of the eastern Andes of Colombia (Santander and Boyacá).
