Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia viridigaster) and Copper-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia cupreicauda).

Proposed subspecies apurensis most probably falls within individual variation of subspecies feliciae. A specimen said to have been taken on Grenada, and described as "Saucerottia wellsi", has alternatively been treated as a vagrant of nominate subspecies. However, its true origin appears dubious.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • tobaci (Gmelin, 1788)   -  Tobago.
  • erythronotos (Lesson, R, 1829)   -  Trinidad.
  • aliciae Richmond, 1895   -  I Margarita, Venezuela.
  • monticola (Todd, 1913)   -  North-western Venezuela.
  • feliciae (Lesson, R, 1840)   -  North-central Venezuela.
  • caudata Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1949   -  North-eastern Venezuela.
  • caurensis (von Berlepsch & Hartert, 1902)   -  Eastern and south-eastern Venezuela.
