Habitat
Humid lowland forest, forest edge and tall secondary growth. From sea-level - c.1,000 m, moving, probably seasonally, to cloud-forest as high as 1,650 m.

Subspecies
Once considered sufficiently distinct to warrant its own genus Pyrilia.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Adult Brown-hooded Parrot (Pyrilia haematotis) lacks yellow head and immature has dull brown on crown. Sympatric Pionus spp. are larger, have a different flight action, red undertail-coverts and lack the yellow head.
