Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

viridiceps Chapman, 1929 - Southern Venezuela southern from Cerro Duida into northern Brazil on upper R Negro and west to south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador (one record) and north-eastern Peru.
purpuratus (J. F. Gmelin, 1788) - Southern Venezuela eastern from Cerro Duida through the Guianas to northern Brazil, including lower R Negro, as far as Maranh�o.
