Subspecies
Subspecies may represent only clinal variation.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
dea (Linnaeus, 1758) - Southern Venezuela (upper R Orinoco), the Guianas, and Brazil north of Amazon (east of R Negro).
brunneiceps (Todd, 1943) - South-eastern Colombia (eastern Guainía, Vaupés, south to Amazonas), eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, and western Brazil (west of R Negro and, south of Amazon, between R Madeira and R Tapajós).
phainopepla (Todd, 1943) - Western Brazil south of Amazon (west of R Madeira).
amazonum (Sclater, PL, 1855) - North-central Brazil (west to R Tapajós, south to northern Mato Grosso) and northern Bolivia (Pando, Beni, northern La Paz).
