Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Dusky-backed Jacamar (Brachygalba salmoni), Pale-headed Jacamar (Brachygalba goeringi) and White-throated Jacamar (Brachygalba albogularis). No contact or intergradation between subspecies is known, and potential zones of overlap merit investigation to elucidate taxomonic relationships. Subspecies phaeonota, known only from the type specimen, was described as a separate species, but considered probably a form of present species. Subspecies melanosterna and naumburgi previously treated as together constituting a separate species, and their taxonomic status may require reassessment.
