Subspecies
Original naming of species confused, with male described first and on very next page female named as "Micropogon Hartlaubii". Has been thought to form a superspecies with Scarlet-hooded Barbet (Eubucco tucinkae), and even regarded as conspecific, but the two appear to be only distantly related. Probably not closely related to other members of genus, although subspecies orientalis has hybridized with nominate subspecies of Lemon-throated Barbet (Eubucco richardsoni) in eastern Ecuador.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
salvini (Shelley, 1891) - Costa Rica and western Panama.
anomalus Griscom, 1929 - Eastern Panama (around Cerro Pirre, Cerro Tacarcuna); probably also adjacent north-western Colombia.
bourcierii (Lafresnaye, 1845) - Andes of western Venezuela disjunctly south to central Colombia (eastern side of central Andes, slopes of eastern Andes).
occidentalis Chapman, 1914 - Slopes of western Andes in Colombia.
aequatorialis (Salvadori & Festa, 1900) - Western Ecuador on western Andean slope and in coastal mountains.
orientalis Chapman, 1914 - Eastern Andean slope of Ecuador, and northern Peru (Cajamarca, Amazonas).
