Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 900 - 3,750 m.
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Phloeoceastes with seven other species, all of which are now lumped into Campephilus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- pollens (Bonaparte, 1845) - Andes from north-central Colombia and south-western Venezuela (Táchira) south to Ecuador.
- peruvianus (Cory, 1915) - Peru (south to Pasco).
