Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Genus has been placed variously in a separate monotypic family, Catamblyrhynchidae, and in a separate subfamily, Catamblyrhynchinae, within Emberizidae. Molecular-genetic data support its inclusion in present family.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
diadema Lafresnaye, 1842 - Western Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá, and Andes southern from Trujillo) and Colombia (Santa Marta Mts, and Andes generally) south to southern Ecuador.
federalis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1953 - Coastal cordillera (Aragua, Vargas and Distrito Federal, probably also Miranda), in northern Venezuela.
citrinifrons von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1896 - Andes of Peru southern on western slope to Lambayeque, and throughout eastern slope south to Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and western Santa Cruz) and to north-western Argentina (Jujuy).
