Formerly regarded as conspecific with Golden-hooded Tanager (Tangara larvata), but molecular-genetic data indicate that latter is more closely related to Blue-necked Tanager (Tangara cyanicollis) than to present species. Golden-hooded Tanager (Tangara larvata) is sister-species to both present species and Blue-necked Tanager (Tangara cyanicollis).
