Subspecies
Has been suggested that subspecies grandis merits full species rank, differing from others morphologically (bill and tail, wing formula), in plumage characters and in some vocalizations, but position of intermediate kotschubeii unclear. Further research is required.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • rhodochlamys (Brandt, 1843)   -  Eastern and south-eastern Kazakhstan (Tien Shan, Dzhungarian Alatau, Tarbagatay and western and southern Altai), southern Siberia (Tuva, Tannu-Ola), north-western China (north-western Xinjiang) and western Mongolia.
  • kotschubeii Zarudny, 1913   -  Eastern Uzbekistan, eastern Turkmenistan, southern Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan (east to Alai Mts, south to northern Pamir Mts).
  • grandis Blyth, 1849   -  North-western and north-eastern Afghanistan, western and north-central Pakistan and western Himalayas east to northern India (east to northern Himachal Pradesh).
