The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
coburni Sharpe, 1901 - Iceland and Faeroe Is. Non-breeding western Europe.
iliacus Linnaeus, 1766 - Northern and eastern Europe eastern across Siberia to lower R Kolyma and Altai. Non-breeding western and southern Europe, northern Africa, Black and Caspian Sea basins and adjacent south-western Asia.
