Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 500 m.
Brazil.
Brazil east of R Madeira, east to Pará (west of R Tocantins) and south to northern Rondônia and extreme northern Mato Grosso).

Estimated population is unknown (2020) and stable.

Subspecies
Schistocichla leucostigma (SACC 2005 + updates) has been split into Spot-winged Antbird (Myrmelastes leucostigma ), Humaita Antbird (Myrmelastes humaythae ), Brownish-headed Antbird (Myrmelastes brunneiceps ) and Rufous-faced Antbird (Myrmelastes rufifacies ) following SACC (2007).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Spot-winged Antbird (Myrmelastes leucostigma ).
No subspecies.
