Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
kangrae Ticehurst, 1923 - North-western Himalayas (Kashmir east to Garhwal).
pulcher Blyth, 1845 - Central and eastern Himalayas east from north-western India (Himachal Pradesh), and north-west, northern and eastern Myanmar, southern China (western Gansu and southern Shaanxi south to south-eastern Xizang and Yunnan), northern Laos and north-western Vietnam (western Tonkin). Non-breeding also eastern and southern Myanmar and north-western Thailand.
vegetus (Bangs, 1913) - Southern China and north-western Vietnam.
