Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and montane forest, subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland, rural gardens. From 500 - 2,000 m, occasionally up to 2,550 m.

Andean Slaty Thrush (Turdus nigriceps) and Eastern Slaty Thrush (Turdus subalaris) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Turdus nigriceps following SACC (2005).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Andean Slaty Thrush (Turdus nigriceps).
