Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Ruddy-capped Nightingale-Thrush (Catharus frantzii), but the two occur sympatrically with no evidence of interbreeding. Subspecies olivascens has been accorded full species rank in the past, but vocally similar to other subspecies.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
olivascens Nelson, 1899 - North-western Mexico.
lambi Phillips, AR, 1969 - Western and central Mexico.
fulvescens Nelson, 1897 - South-western Mexico.
occidentalis Sclater, 1859 - Southern Mexico (Oaxaca).
