Nest
An open, loosly-built, cup, composed of dead leaves, vine-tendrils and fibers, lined with finer materials, in a pandanus palm, on top of a dead stub of a tree or in the crown of a sapling, usually about 2 - 10 meters above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
Usually 2; lustrous, cream to buff, boldly marked with thick longitudinal streaks and underlying smudges of brown, blue-black and pale grey; oval; about 34 x 23 mm. Incubation: about 15 - 16 days; by female.

Subspecies
Sometimes thought to form a superspecies with Victoria's Riflebird (Lophorina victoriae). Has been considered conspecific with Victoria's Riflebird (Lophorina victoriae).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • magnificus (Vieillot, 1819)   -  Western and central New Guinea from Vogelkop east to Wewak area in northern and, in south, to Purari R.
  • intercedens Sharpe, 1882   -  Lowlands of central and south-eastern Papua New Guinea. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Growling Riflebird (Lophorina intercedens).
  • alberti Elliot, DG, 1871   -  Albany I and patchily on adjacent Cape York Peninsula (south to Weipa area on western coast and to Rocky R area of McIlwraith Range on east), in north-eastern Australia.


Similar Species
Victoria's Riflebird (Lophorina victoriae) and Paradise Riflebird (Lophorina paradisea) which have different ranges (further south).
