Habitat
Lowland evergreen, southern temperate, white-sand and secondary forest and, at least seasonally, is most numerous in Araucaria forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m.
Southern and south-eastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, south-eastern Sío Paulo), extreme eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (Misiones, Corrientes, Chaco, Formosa) and north-eastern Uruguay (Cerro Largo).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through agricultural conversion and deforestation for mining and plantation production, urbanisation, industrialisation, agricultural expansion, colonisation and associated road-building, are the main threats.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Possibly forms a superspecies with Purplish Jay (Cyanocorax cyanomelas). It has been suggested that Violaceous Jay (Cyanocorax violaceus) and Curl-crested Jay (Cyanocorax cristatellus) could be members of same superspecies.
