Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest.

Range (Guide)

Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).

New Britain (Whiteman Mts, Nakanai Mts and Mt Talawae), in Bismarck Archipelago.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Clearance of lowland forest for conversion to oil palm plantations has been the main threat. It is also thought that this species's habitat is now also being cleared.

Voice
A series of 3 to 8 soft, mellow whistled pairs of notes, one pair per 0.7 seconds. The first note is simple and the second trilled or uneven, slightly down-slurred.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Affinities uncertain, and sometimes placed in a monotypic genus. Further research is needed. May be closest to Sooty Honeyeater (Melidectes fuscus). These two, together with Short-bearded Honeyeater (Melidectes nouhuysi) and Long-bearded Honeyeater (Melidectes princeps), comprise a group of medium-sized species that differ from others in genus in size, morphology, plumage and voice.
