Interior eastern Brazil, locally in western and southern Ceará, Piauí, western Pernambuco, Bahia and extreme northern Minas Gerais.

Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.
Status NT
Habitat destruction through conversion to agriculture, extensive razing and human development is the main threat.

Voice
Song is a series of three parts, the first ascending, the second with double-noted notes and the third three-notes, as 'piupiupiupiu tetju tetju tetju tetjutu'.

Subspecies
Was for many years treated as conspecific with Speckle-breasted Antpitta (Hylopezus nattereri), despite striking differences in voice, plumage, habitat and distribution.
