Subspecies
Possibly a sister-species of Pale-billed Antpitta (Grallaria carrikeri). Also related to Jocotoco Antpitta (Grallaria ridgelyi). Vocal differences of subspecies obsoleta suggest that it may be a separate species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
ruficeps Sclater, PL, 1874 - Colombia in central Andes and on western slope of eastern Andes in Cundinamarca.
obsoleta Chubb, C, 1916 - Western Ecuador.
nuchalis Sclater, 1859 - Eastern Ecuador and adjacent northern Peru.
