Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Drab-breasted Bamboo-tyrant (Hemitriccus diops ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
flammulatus Berlepsch, 1901 - Eastern Peru (San Martín south to Madre de Dios), north-western Brazil (Acre, and R Mequéns in Rondônia) and northern Bolivia (east to eastern Beni, south to Cochabamba).
olivascens (Todd, 1915) - Eastern Bolivia (R Surutú, in Santa Cruz).
