Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 2,300 - 2,800 m, occasionally down to 2,000 m.
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Colorful Puffleg (Eriocnemis mirabilis), from which it is separated by the arid valley of R Patia.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- alinae (Bourcier, 1842) - South-central and eastern Andes of Colombia to eastern Andes of Ecuador.
- dybowskii Taczanowski, 1882 - Eastern Andes of northern and central Peru.
