Subspecies
Formerly considered a close relative of Oreotrochilus. Behaviour and morphology indicate phylogenetic affinities with Boissonneaua.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
bougueri (Bourcier, 1851) - Pacific slope of Andes of south-western Colombia and north-western Ecuador.
leucura Lawrence, 1864 - Eastern slope of eastern Andes in southern Colombia (Nariño), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, White-tailed Hillstar (Urochroa leucura).
