Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Black-necked Aracari (Pteroglossus aracari). Both belong to the Collared Aracari (Pteroglossus torquatus) group", which also includes Many-banded Aracari (Pteroglossus pluricinctus), Collared Aracari (Pteroglossus torquatus) and Fiery-billed Aracari (Pteroglossus frantzii), all being closely related. Contrary to some views, probably not closely related to Ivory-billed Aracari (Pteroglossus azara). Nominate intergrades with subspecies australis in southern and east of its range.
