Subspecies
Possibly forms superspecies with Chestnut-backed Owlet (Glaucidium castanotum), with which has been considered conspecific. Although both present in Sri Lanka, they occupy different habitats.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
radiatum (Tickell, 1833) - Himalayas from Himachal Pradesh east to Bhutan, Bangladesh and possibly western Myanmar, and south through India. Also Sri Lanka.
