Subspecies
May form superspecies with Fulvous Owl (Strix fulvescens), possibly also including Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis). Has at times been considered conspecific with Fulvous Owl (Strix fulvescens).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
varia Barton, 1799 - From south-eastern Alaska (possibly) and south-western Canada south to northern California, east to Nova Scotia, and central and eastern USA (south to northern Texas and North Carolina).
helveola (Bangs, 1899) - Texas.
georgica Latham, 1801 - South-eastern USA.
sartorii (Ridgway, 1874) - Mountains of central Mexico (Durango to Oaxaca).
