A cup of grasses and moss, in a hole of a tree or in a nest box, lined with hair and feathers.

5 - 7; smooth, glossy, pale blue.
Subspecies
Known to have hybridized with Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
phoenicurus (Linnaeus, 1758) - Europe (except south-east) and north-western Africa east to central Siberia and northern Mongolia. Non-breeding Africa.
samamisicus (Hablizl, 1783) - Southern Balkans and Greece east to Turkmenistan, southern Uzbekistan and Iran. Non-breeding north-eastern Africa and Arabian Peninsula.
