Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Nominate subspecies and argentata differ distinctively, but intervening subspecies diaphora and toddi may represent clinal variation. Further research is needed.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
naevia (Gmelin, 1788) - Eastern Venezuela (eastern Sucre south to Delta Amacuro and eastern and southern Bolívar), Trinidad, the Guianas, and north-eastern Amazonian Brazil (lower R Negro east to Amapá and, south of R Amazon, east of R Tocantins to western Maranhío).
diaphora Todd, 1913 - South-central Venezuela (lower R Caura drainage, in north-western Bolívar).
toddi Hellmayr, 1924 - South-central Amazonian Brazil (from lower R Madeira and both banks of R Teles Pires east to R Tocantins).
argentata (Des Murs, 1856) - South-western Venezuela (western and southern Amazonas), south-eastern Colombia (southern from Meta and Vichada), eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, western Amazonian Brazil (east to R Madeira, Rondônia and south-western Mato Grosso) and north-western and eastern Bolivia (Pando, La Paz, western Beni, Cochabamba, extreme north-eastern Santa Cruz).
