Habitat
During the breeding season on medium to large lakes where there are plenty of fish. Outside the breeding season on coastal waters and very occasionally large inland lakes and reservoirs.

Belgium (NB), Canada (B) (P), Cuba (NB), Denmark (P), Faroe Islands (NB), France (NB) (P), Greenland (B) (NB), Iceland (B) (NB), Ireland (NB), Mexico, Netherlands Antilles (NB), Norway (NB) (P), Portugal (NB), Spain (NB) (P), St Pierre and Miquelon (NB) (P), Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands (B), United Kingdom (NB), USA (B).

Vagrant to Albania, Algeria, Bermuda, Croatia (Local Name: Hrvatska), Estonia, Finland, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Morocco, Poland, Russia (Asian), Serbia, Turkey.

Unknown to Austria (NB), Bulgaria (NB), Czech Republic (NB), Germany (NB) (P), Italy (NB), Romania (NB), Slovakia (Slovak Republic) (NB), Slovenia (NB), Sweden (NB), Switzerland (NB), Ukraine (NB).

Mainly Nearctic, where breeds between 48° northern and Arctic Circle, in places south to c. 40° north, and north to c. 78° N; in northern Atlantic also breeds in Greenland, Iceland, Bear I and very occasionally Scotland. Winters mainly along coasts of northern Atlantic and north-eastern Pacific, also stopping off in Great Lakes.
 
Mainly the coasts of north-west Scotland in summer, but in winter also the coasts of Britain and Ireland.
 
Population
Estimated population is 610,000 - 640,000 (2010).

Status LC
Very few breed in Great Britain (Scotland). The numbers increase in winter but have recently declined.

Food
Mainly fish. Occasionally crustaceans, insects and their larvae.

Voice
Generally silent, but an eerie wail, and barking quack when flying.

Breeding Season (Guide)
Very few breed in Scotland, possibly May - July. Breeding begins at about 2 years of age.

Nest
Either directly on the ground or on a heap of water-weeds, close to water, having a characteristc slipway leading to it from the water.

Eggs (Guide)
Usually 2; dark brown to olive, with a few dark spots; cylindrical. Incubation: about 30 days; by both sexes.

Young
Fledge in about 60 - 65 days.

Subspecies
Hybridization with Black-throated Diver (Gavia arctica) reported.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Immature Gannet (Morus bassanus), Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) and Red-throated Diver (Gavia stellata), Black-throated Diver (Gavia arctica).
