First Described (Guide)
(Linnaeus, 1758)

Range (Guide)
Eastern Central Atlantic (NB), Southeast Atlantic (B) (NB), Southwest Atlantic (NB), St Helena (B).

Vagrant to United Kingdom.

Ascension I, southern Atlantic, and surrounding waters; now breeds only on adjoining Boatswainbird Islet.
 
Population
Estimated population is 17,000 - 20,200 (2010).

Status VU
Predation by humans, introduced Black Rats Rattus rattus and most especially feral cats are the main threats.

Nest
An untidy platform of sticks, feathers and other debris, located on top of a low bush or in trees, or on the ground when vegetation is absent. In colonies close to nests of other breeding seabirds.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Similar Species
Adult male allegedly inseparable from Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens), but female is only female frigatebird with no white on head and body.
