  Long forked tail, short bill. Chin and throat light buff. Back is grey in spring.

Habitat
Dry, open areas with shallow pools, large saltmarshes. From sea-level - 2,200 m.

Southern Europe from western Spain to Turkey.
 
Population
Estimated population is 170,000 - 600,000 (2010).

Status LC
Changes to habitat and use of pesticides are the main threats.

Invertebrates, especially insects caught on the wing.

Voice
Tern-like and harsh 'kik', 'kirrik' and 'stwick' uttered in flight.

Nest
A shallow scrape in the ground, in bare open areas.

Eggs (Guide)
3; smooth, not glossy, cream with dark spots, blotches and streaks.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Oriental Pratincole (Glareola maldivarum) and Black-winged Pratincole (Glareola nordmanni), although some authorities exclude latter from the superspecies.

Possible subspecies boweni of western Africa included in fuelleborni.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • pratincola (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Southern Europe to Pakistan. Winters in sub-Saharan Africa, north of 5° N.
  • erlangeri Neumann, 1920   -  Coastal plains of southern Somalia and northern Kenya.
  • fuelleborni Neumann, 1910   -  Senegal east to southern Kenya and south to Zaire, Namibia and eastern South Africa.


Similar Species
Black-winged Pratincole (Glareola nordmanni) which lacks the dark wingtips and reddish-brown underwing coverts, and has a dull white belly.
