Subspecies
Sometimes placed with Black-headed Waxbill (Estrilda atricapilla) and Kandt's Waxbill (Estrilda kandti) in a separate genus, Krimhilda. Recent studies of mitochondrial phylogeny indicate that this species and nominate subspecies of Kandt's Waxbill (Estrilda kandti) form a sister-clade to nominate subspecies and subspecies avakubi of Black-headed Waxbill (Estrilda atricapilla).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
nonnula Hartlaub, 1883 - South-eastern Nigeria (Mambilla and Obudu Plateaux, Gashaka-Gumti Game Reserve) and Cameroon east to north-central and southern Central African Republic, south-eastern Sudan, Uganda and western Kenya, south to north-western Gabon, northern and eastern DRCongo (south to Itombwe Highlands) and north-western Tanzania.
