Subspecies
Subspecies interbreed in southern Nigeria.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
castaneofuscus Lesson, R, 1840 - Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, western Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia east, discontinuously, to southern Nigeria. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chestnut-and-black Weaver (Ploceus castaneofuscus).
nigerrimus Vieillot, 1819 - Southern Nigeria, southern Cameroon, southern Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, western Gabon, northern and western PRCongo, DRCongo, extreme southern Sudan, northern Angola (including Cabinda), also southern Uganda, extreme western Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and north-western and western Tanzania.
