Subspecies
Has hybridized with Black-headed Weaver (Ploceus melanocephalus) in north-eastern DRCongo. Birds from Darfur (western Sudan) described as subspecies furensis, but they fall within general range of plumage variation of the species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

furensis Lynes, 1923 - Western Sudan.
taeniopterus (Reichenbach, 1863) - Sudan, western and south-western Ethiopia, South Sudan, north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and western Kenya.
