van Someren, 1920

Habitat
Lowland and mid-altitude forest. Mostly in the canopy of large trees but also along streams, at forest edges and in mature trees remaining in cleared areas. From 470 - 1,900 m.

Range (Guide)
Congo [The Democratic Republic of the] (B) (NB), Kenya (B) (NB), Uganda (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 - 19,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation due to encroachment for cultivation, uncontrolled tree-felling and charcoal making, intense cattle-grazing from small-scale farms, are the main threats.

Habits
Commonly feeds alongside Buff-throated Apalis (Apalis rufogularis).

Voice
A high-pitched 'titititit', followed by 'si si chik chik'.

Subspecies
Formerly treated as conspecific with Rufous-crowned Eremomela (Eremomela badiceps), but the two found to be sympatric in eastern DRCongo.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • kalindei Prigogine, 1958   -  East-central and north-eastern DRCongo (Abyaloze, Kailo, Kalima, Makayobo, Mazali, Beni), and south-western Uganda (Nyondo Forest).
  • turneri van Someren, 1920   -  Western Kenya (Kakamega Forest, southern Nandi Forest).


Similar Species
Rufous-crowned Eremomela (Eremomela badiceps) has longer wings, chestnut not restricted to forehead, stronger legs and feet.
