Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,300 - 3,000 m.
Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Rwanda, Uganda.

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Brown-chested Alethe (Chamaetylas poliocephala), White-chested Alethe (Chamaetylas fuelleborni) and Thyolo Alethe (Chamaetylas choloensis).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- poliophrys (Sharpe, 1902) - North-eastern and eastern DRCongo, western Uganda, western Rwanda and western Burundi.
- kaboboensis (Prigogine, 1957) - Mt Kabobo, in eastern DRCongo.
