Subspecies
Geographic variation subtle, and majority of subspecies weakly differentiated.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
bardus (Bangs & Barbour, 1922) - Eastern Panama and north-western Colombia (northern Chocó east to southern Bolívar).
mirus Meyer de Schauensee, 1950 - North-western Colombia (lower Atrato Valley and inland from coast).
flavus (Chapman, 1914) - Northern and central Colombia (Santa Marta and Magdalena to western Meta) and northern Venezuela.
tamborensis Todd, 1952 - R Lebrija (Santander), in central Colombia.
aequinoctialis (Sclater, PL, 1858) - South-central and south-eastern Colombia (Meta south to Putumayo and Amazonas) south to north-central Bolivia (Cochabamba). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Western Olivaceous Flatbill (Rhynchocyclus aequinoctialis).
guianensis McConnell, 1911 - Southern Venezuela, the Guianas and northern Brazil.
sordidus Todd, 1952 - Brazil south of Amazon (R Tapajós east to R Tocantins and northern Maranhío).
olivaceus (Temminck, 1820) - North-central and eastern Brazil (eastern Pará; Pernambuco south to Rio de Janeiro).
