Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland seasonally wet / flooded grassland. Also inland wetlands, including, marshes, swamps, fens, bogs and peatlands and pasturelands.

Estimated population is <50 (2010).
Status CR
Merciless hunting and trapping, and disturbance of habitat by aquaculture and agriculture are the main threats.

No subspecies.
Similar Species
Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) could conceivably occur as a vagrant, easily differentiated by conspicuous white underparts and reddish legs.
