Subspecies
Possibly closest to Chestnut-belted Gnateater (Conopophaga aurita). Subspecies perspicillata possibly not tenable.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- nigrifrons Pinto, 1954 - Coastal north-eastern Brazil from Paraíba south to Alagoas.
- perspicillata (Lichtenstein, MHK, 1823) - Coastal Bahia; recent records in adjacent Sergipe, to north, presumably of this race.
- melanops (Vieillot, 1818) - South-eastern Brazil from Espírito Santo south to Santa Catarina.
