Subspecies
True affinities uncertain. Birds of this species from Huon Peninsula, currently included in subspecies piperata, may represeent a separate taxon.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
crassirostris (Salvadori, 1876) - North-western and western New Guinea (Vogelkop and Snow Mts).
piperata (De Vis, 1898) - Central ranges of eastern New Guinea, including Huon Peninsula. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Spotted Berrypecker (Rhamphocharis piperata).
viridescens Mayr, 1931 - East-central New Guinea (Herzog Mts; possibly also Kuper Range).
